Replacing tires in 5 steps.

A plain-English guide to buying tires: when to replace them, how many, which size and type, and how to get them on.

Step 1

Confirm if you need new tires

Check four things before you buy.

  • Tread depth. Most shops recommend replacing tires at 2/32 in (1.6 mm). For winter driving, many advise changing them at 4/32 in (3 mm), when snow grip fades.
  • Wear bars. Raised bars sit in the grooves of the tread. When the tread is level with them, the tire is worn out.
  • Age. The last four digits of the DOT code on the sidewall give the week and year it was made, so 2419 means the 24th week of 2019. Many tire makers advise replacing tires around 10 years old, even when the tread looks fine.
  • Damage. Cracks in the sidewall, bulges, a nail or a puncture, or a vibration or pull while you drive all need looking at.

Not sure what you are looking at? Call (905) 266-2275 and ask.

Step 2

Decide how many tires you need

  • Four is the best answer. Four matching tires wear evenly and handle predictably.
  • If you replace two, put the new pair on the rear axle, whichever wheels drive the car. New tires at the back keep the car stable when you brake and turn.
  • All-wheel-drive vehicles are fussier about tread depth matching. Check your owner’s manual, and expect to be advised to replace all four.
  • Replace one only when the other three are nearly new, and match the model.

Step 3

Pick the right size

The size is printed on the sidewall of the tire you have now, and on the sticker inside the driver’s door. Buy the same size unless the sticker or your owner’s manual lists alternatives. Still guessing? Call with your car’s year, make and model and we confirm the size.

Read it like this

215
WidthHow wide the tire is, in millimetres.
55
ProfileSidewall height as a percentage of the width.
R
ConstructionR is radial, which is nearly every car tire.
17

94
Load indexHow much weight one tire can carry.
V
Speed ratingThe top speed the tire is built for, 240 km/h for a V.

Step 4

Choose the right type for how you drive

Cold changes rubber. Below about 7 °C, summer and all-season tires stiffen and lose grip, which is why a winter set matters. Look for the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol on a winter tire, and ask your insurer about a winter tire discount.

Step 5

Get them fitted at our Milton shop

Choose install in your cart, pick a time, and our team fits the tires at 410 Industrial Dr, Milton, ON. The install is $120.00 once per order, plus tax, and your time is booked when you pay. Prefer to have them shipped? Choose that in the cart instead.
